It’s a new year! And a new decade! How about some new plans for organization?
We’re all busy. But most home chores that can overwhelm us are just a matter of organization and developing good habits. Here are a few simple ways to keep your household chores simplified so you can enjoy the important things in life!
Develop a Meal Plan
One of the most overwhelming things about family life is meal strategy. Without a plan, you get a lot of unhealthy fast food meals and takeout at the last minute. Maybe one of your New Year’s resolutions was about eating healthier? This will help!
When meal planning is organized, you will wonder what took you so long to implement it. Allot a few hours one night each week to sit down and select dinners for the upcoming week. Shop for the ingredients at night (when the store is less busy). Then pre-prep some of the items for each meal so it is ready to go for cooking.
Shopping goes faster when you divide your list according to your store layout. Use a checklist app on your smartphone and then go for it. Are there 3 meals that ask for chopped onions? Put all 3 through the food processor and store them in the refrigerator to measure out when you need them. That way you aren’t spending time chopping and prepping when you’re in a hurry to get a meal on the table. When you have meals organized, you can even schedule a Chinese takeout or pizza break in the mix.
Organize a Little at a Time
How many of us have looked at our home and wondered how we will get it all done? You will if you take one small section at a time. Divide your home into sections and vow to organize one section a week. Or a month. There are no rules here. Only dividing and conquering. It’s up to you how much time you have to devote each week. The less time, the smaller your areas should be.
Little Things
Does an unmade bed drive you crazy? Train yourself to make it the minute you get out of it. Laundry seem overwhelming? Do one load each day. We make things harder than they need to be and then we dwell on how hard we’ve made them. The unfortunate thing is that they just don’t get done that way. Developing good habits make them seem less of a chore.
A System
There’s something very satisfying about checking things off a list. If you need a sense of feeling accomplished, put household chores into list form and then check them off as you go. Often when cleaning house, we feel like we’ve worked and worked and see little in the way of anything being achieved. But with checkmarks next to each item, you see a material mark of achievement.
Organize chores for each room — you can even use index cards to attach to your cleaning supplies — and then check off each one upon completion.
Prioritizing the Things That Matter
Busy families can be overwhelmed for time. Prioritize your time to make room for what really matters. In many cases, that can mean getting professional cleaning help to offset those responsibilities that you just don’t have time for.
